Meet the band.

The All Girl Big Band emerged in full force during 2016 and has not looked back. A conversation between music director Lana Law and vocalist Kate Taylor "had us wondering if we could actually get a big band together here in Christchurch consisting of only female musicians". In a largely male dominated musical genre, this crazy, out of the box idea became reality, and the band has been actively performing ever since.

The majority of the band are professional musicians or music teachers in Christchurch, and work hard to inspire other female musicians to confidently advance in the jazz world.

I love playing with a bunch of like-minded women. Being able to inspire each other and others too, and the proud feeling you get being a part of a group of hard out women making awesome music.
— Lana Law

The All Girl Big Band debuted at the Court Theatre as part of their ‘Hidden Artists’ segment, since then they have had stunning success with sell out shows in Nelson, Wellington, Palmerston North and Christchurch, and record-breaking crowd numbers at outdoor events such as Lazy Sundays and at Founders Park. Their regular gigs around Christchurch include; The Christchurch Big Band Festival, Jazz After Work, The Christchurch Folk Club, Fat Eddies, performing for the Swingtown Rebels, playing at corporate events and as guest artists at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards. They have toured throughout New Zealand performing at The Manawatu Jazz Festival, The Rogue and Vagabond (Wellington), The Nelson Jazz Festival, and have recorded their first CD.

AGBB has also worked with guest artists such as: Holly Hofmann, labeled as the most authoritative, flutist in jazz today; Bic Runga; Baritone Saxophonist, Adam Schroeder, who has established his influence as a major voice and force in the global jazz community; Naomi Ferguson; and Delaney Davidson.

As well as traditional big band repertoire, AGBB also perform themed concerts including 'A Tribute to Natalie Cole', 'The Ages' - “An unequivocally chilled-out and enthusiastic masterclass in Big Band virtuosity", which honours the women who have changed music in the last 100 years, and ‘Meet the Band’ (a virtuosic trip through each section of the band).
